. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in south san francisco right now where the average price, cate, of regular gas is well over 4.60 a gallon. >> reporter: that's right, michelle. actually it's the two stations nearby. one is at 4.79 a gallon the other across the street 4.99 for a gallon of regular. the governor is asking for the release of less expensive blends. the early release will bring up gas supplies 8 to 10%. experts say it could drop gas prices about 15 to 20 cents per gallon of regular but it could still take a week before we see any changes. according to the aaa, gas prices are at record highs in san francisco. we're look at $4.73 for a gavel regular in san jose and oakland. it's $4.67. our state supplies were cut short after the chevron refinery fire in august and a power failure that knocked out an exxon refinery southern california. >> california runs a tight supply and demand balance because we use different blends of gas than the rest of the country so if anything goes wrong we can't get more parts of gas from other parts of country very easily. >> reporter: the winter

injured while fighting a large fire at a strip mall there. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran tells us that apparently kate the roof collapsed. >> that's right. the roof collapsed. it was one of the biggest challenges that crews had to face here and they are still on scene now but to join us or to tell us the basics of what happened, we're joined now by deputy chief dave lord to give us the basics. thank you for joining us. i'm sure you're very busy. what happened? >> shortly after 1:00 this morning, a passerby reported some light smoke coming from the corner unit of the billion. crews showed up about four minutes later. at that point we had some fire coming out of the front door of the occupancy in the corner. they advance and the hose line inside and kind of got some early recognition they might have fire over them in the attic so they backed out. a few minutes laterred this a partial roof collapse and the fire was exposed in the attic. >> reporter: you said it started in the corner of the building. what made it spread so quickly? >> it kind of has a common attic up there so they had a lo

the fate of her daughter after two decades. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec reports with new clues on the case. >> reporter: her mother wrote on this facebook page that she has been running for a while, she wrote on it overnight, dear michaela, i think this might be it. there is a bone fragment tested it results inconclusive. it's now being sent to a lab in virginia for positive identification. but results could take weeks. now, investigators want to know if it belongs to michaela garecht abducted here in hayward back in 1988. the bone fragment was again to another family. joanne hobson's body was found. the family was suspicious after seeing investigators dig up the burial site with a backhoe. testing found 28 of the bone fragments given to the family belonged to at least three other people including a child between the ages of 5 and 14. michaela was nine when she disappeared. >> i don't know how else to live because because we have lived this way for so long searching for michaela and hoping that she would come home. >> reporter: a sketch of michaela's alleged kidnapper looks similar to

. -- in a cbs news poll of uncommitted voters, 50% thought the vice president run, 31% sided for ryan and 19% called it a tie. 56% thought biden would be an effective president if necessary compared with 49% for ryan. not surprisingly, both sides claimed victory. mitt romney's campaign said biden seemed off balance and strange. the president's team said the debate exposed the risks of electing a romney/ryan ticket. the next presidential debate is tuesday. randall pinkston, cbs news, danville, kentucky. and we can expect those poll results to change in the coming days as the samples are increased and the polling organizations dig deeper on the impact of these first and only vice-presidential debates. reporting live in danville, kentucky, i'm randall pinkston, back to you. >> randall, it's certainly interesting to watch a lot more sparks in this debate than the presidential debate. what were considered the strong and weak points of the candidate? >> well, after president obama's performance last week democrats have to show they are willing to fight and also defend the president's record
